Teacher's Page
This WebQuest is designed for 5th grade students in Science (Space Science) to engage in an inquiry-based learning experience focused on the Solar System. Students work collaboratively as “astronaut teams” to research the eight planets, organize scientific information, and apply their understanding by creating a Solar System booklet and model.
The activity promotes critical thinking, collaboration, and scientific communication while integrating technology and creativity.
Students will answer the guiding question:
Which planet in the Solar System should astronauts explore, and what makes it the best choice?
Learning Objectives
By completing this WebQuest, students will be able to:
-
Identify and describe the eight planets in the Solar System
-
Compare and contrast planetary characteristics (size, temperature, moons, and features)
-
Organize scientific information using written and visual formats
-
Apply reasoning skills to select the most suitable planet for exploration
-
Demonstrate collaboration and communication within a team setting
-
Create a labeled Solar System model in correct planetary order
Instructional Strategy
This WebQuest uses Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) and Collaborative Learning strategies. Students take on authentic roles (researcher, writer, designer, presenter) to promote accountability and teamwork. The teacher acts as a facilitator while students construct knowledge through guided exploration.
Key strategies include:
-
Cooperative learning groups
-
Role-based learning
-
Guided scientific research
-
Hands-on and visual learning products
-
Student-led discussion and decision-making
Teacher Role
-
Assign student groups and roles
-
Provide access to approved research websites
-
Guide students in scientific accuracy and vocabulary use
-
Monitor group collaboration and participation
-
Support students during discussions and decision-making
-
Facilitate presentations and provide feedback using the rubric
Standards Reached
-
5.CT2.9 - Develops a model, from an example, to describe the interaction of at least two Planets; and how the Sun’s energy influences these interactions.
-
5.R.9.1I - Integrate information from 2 informational texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably
-
5.W.2 - Write informational texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content
-
5.R.7.1I - Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, timelines, animations, or interactive elements on web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the informational text in which it appears.
